Chapter Twenty-One

An hour after George left, Alex heard knocking at the window of his study, and he thought he had to be dreaming. Surely, Aimee wouldn’t dare visit him here again, not after he’d specifically told her not to go anywhere after he dropped her off at his aunt’s earlier in the day.

But another tapping at the window suggested he wasn’t dreaming, so he got up from his chair and strode over to the window where, sure enough, his fiancée’s face was visible through the glass, the afternoon sunlight making a halo around her head.

He swore heartily as he opened the window and pulled her through once again. “What the devil are you doing here? Does the countess even know you’re here?”

“Unlike you, she doesn’t believe she’s my keeper,” the darn woman said, raising a brow at him and crossing her hands over her chest.

“Do you Americans not use front doors? And let me guess, you walked here again, too?” The woman was going to be the death of him, he thought, blowing out a breath. “I don’t remember my previous fiancée being so damn difficult. No woman, in fact.”

“That’s because she wanted to marry you, whereas I do not,” came the woman’s pert retort. “And, yes, I walked here. I have legs, Your Grace.” Her hands fisted on her hips, and she looked as if she were ready to go a round boxing him. “I’m perfectly capable of using them on such a fine day. There was no need to bother the countess’s carriage driver or waste a penny on a hansom cab for such a short distance.”

For a second, he debated throwing her over his shoulder and marching her to his carriage to return her to his aunt’s, then he thought he’d rather march her to his bed. “Are you going to tell me why you’re here, then?”

“After you left, I sent a note to an old friend, Professor Burton, asking him if he knew anything about any murmurs in the world of paleontology about trying to scare or harm someone. And he replied straight back with some useful information.”

She smiled up at him, and it was all Alex could do to stop himself from pushing her against the wall and kissing her until she was moaning his name. Instead, he pressed his lips together and counted to five. “An old friend? How do you even know this professor?”

The man was a lecturer at Cambridge University and one of the foremost experts on paleontology in the world. Alex knew him, but not well enough to send the man a note.

“I’ve been corresponding with him for years, discussing various hypotheses regarding calcareous microfossils.” She shrugged, and Alex got the distinct impression she wasn’t telling him the entire truth.

“In any event,” she continued, “after what happened earlier and the possibility it could be a fellow collector behind the attack, I thought of the professor and decided I’d ask him if he knew anything, which he does. Well, sort of.”

“What does
